OFFICIAL CELESTIAL PICTURES Press Release For The SHAW BROS. DVDs!!!

Celestial Pictures recently held a press conference in Hong Kong, celebrating the long-awaited release of the Shaw Brothers catalog on DVD and VCD. SB veterans Gordon Liu and Cheng Pei Pei were on hand for the festivities. The first wave of titles will street on December 5 in the form of HK import discs. We don't want to steal the thunder from this momentus announcement, so here it is:

Celestial Pictures presents
Shaw Brothers Masterpieces
Digitally Restored
(Press Conference)

Celestial Pictures Ltd. proudly announced the coming release of the Shaw Brothers film masterpieces, which have largely been unavailable to audiences after their initial theatrical release. A total of 760 gems from this film treasure trove will be made available for the first time on DVD and VCD formats from the 5th of this December onwards, after undergoing a
state-of-the-art digitization process to restore each film's sound and image to exceptional quality. The entire restoration process will take over three years and involves a team of 30 professionals who work round-the-clock to restore the visual and sound quality of each frame of the 760 movies.

The launch was announced today at the historic Shaw Brothers Studio lot in Clear Water Bay by William Pfeiffer, CEO of Celestial Pictures. Mr. Pfeiffer commented, "Celestial Pictures is thrilled and honored to launch the Shaw Brothers library in the restored digital format. Modern audiences worldwide will now have a unique opportunity to these masterpieces of Chinese cinema."

The event was attended by Terry Lai, CEO of Intercontinental Video Limited (video distributor of the Celestial Shaw Brothers library in Hong Kong and Macau) and several Shaw celebrities, including Tsin Ting (song artist behind the screen of 79 Shaw films including "The Kingdom and the Beauty"), Cheng Pei-pei (queen of martial arts films, star of "Come Drink With Me" and
"Hong Kong Nocturne"), Cecilia Ip (female lead in "Let?s Make Laugh") and Liu Chia-hui (male lead in "The 36th Chamber of Shaolin").

The Shaw Brothers Studio was built by Sir Run Run Shaw in 1958. With a studio lot of two million square feet located in Clear Water Bay, Shaw Brothers pushed the Hong Kong film industry to new heights. The Shaw Brothers Studio quickly became a movie empire and South East Asia's most prolific producer of a wide array of films: from renowned martial arts
films to historical adventures, from horror fantasies to slapstick romantic comedies, from action thrillers to enchanting musicals and unforgettable period dramas. It also earned worldwide recognition and won numerous international awards. It was largely due to the remarkable success of the Shaw Brothers films that Hong Kong became known as "Hollywood East".

With the rebirth of the Shaw Brothers films in the digitally re-mastered format, film audiences in Hong Kong and all over the world will once again be able to be entertained by the magic that the Shaw Brothers Studio had created. The first phase of the unveiling of these masterpieces will begin with the video launch in Hong Kong later this year, accompanied by a high
profile marketing and publicity campaign.

Celestial Pictures Shaw Brothers Line-Up

As promised, we have a major scoop for you with regards to the long awaited Celestial Pictures Shaw Brothers releases. In the past few months, there's been a lot of conjecture and speculation about the imminent arrival of the classic Shaw Brothers back catalog. There's been rumors stating that these discs will not see the light of day at all. Still, another rumor suggests that the releases will be VCD only. Certainly Celestial Pictures representatives have inadvertently added to the controversy by being purposely vague with details and with the street dates being pushed back ever further down the calendar. The first batch of DVDs were scheduled for April, and then pushed back to late summer. Word is that we may have to wait until after 2002 to finally see them in the shelves of the U.S. stores. What we are trying to do here is clear the air a bit, and present the facts as we know them.

The following revelations you are about to read are fact, but they were not released to us by the folks at Celestial Pictures. If you contact their offices to confirm this information, they may not verify the titles in question. But we will present the facts and will present proof of what we say, so even you skeptical ones will be pacified. Before revealing the information, let us re-iterate one major statement: This information was not provided to us by Celestial Pictures; do not hold us responsible if a particular title or format changes. Consider all information as tentative, to be cancelled or reshuffled at any time by Celestial Pictures. Now that this disclaimer is in everyone's subconscious, let's get on with the facts.

The yearly Cannes Film Festival is the place where production companies and rights holders peddle their celluloid wares to distributors. This year, Celestial Pictures sent representatives to showcase the remastered Shaw Brothers films, and a mint copy of King Hu's COME DRINK WITH ME was even screened. The Celestial Reps were also looking for potential distributors for their Shaw Brothers DVDs and VCDs. Specially produced flyers for many of their popular films were given out to stimulate interest for home video acquisition. Furthermore, Celestial Reps circulated a document which contained detailed listings of their titles that are scheduled for release over the next year. This document provides film data, but does not specify any release dates or formats. There are over a hundred titles on this list, nearly half of which are martial arts movies! The rest are horror, fantasy, period dramas, comedies, and even musicals. Lots and lots of great stuff here for martial arts fans and others--so be sure sure to read the entire list beyond the Kung Fu stuff.

Below are some scans of the Shaw Brothers flyers given out at the Cannes Film Festival:

Here is an actual scan of the document given out at the Cannes Film Festival containing the individual Shaw Brothers title listings:
